Faith and Unity: Trusting God’s Strength Over Our Own

This past Sunday at Oak Grove Church, we gathered as a church family to lift up one another in prayer and seek God’s presence together. Our time began with prayers for several individuals facing difficult circumstances, including a daughter in the hospital, a coworker preparing for heart valve replacement surgery, and a friend recovering from an ankle replacement. As always, we were reminded of the power of coming together in faith and carrying one another’s burdens before the Lord.

Brother Eli Duarte brought a powerful message centered on faith, unity, and the story of Gideon found in the Book of Judges.

God Works Through Our Weakness

When God called Gideon, he was not a mighty warrior standing confidently before an army. He was hiding in fear, feeling inadequate and unqualified for the task ahead. Yet God saw something different. God saw a man who, despite his weakness, could be used for His glory.

The story of Gideon reminds us that God is not limited by our abilities, resources, or confidence. In fact, throughout Scripture, God often chooses the unlikely, the overlooked, and the weak so that His power can be clearly seen.

Too often we rely on our own strength, our own plans, and our own understanding. When challenges come, our first instinct is to figure things out ourselves. But God calls us to trust Him completely, recognizing that victory comes not through our power but through His.

The Importance of Unity

Brother Eli also emphasized the importance of unity within the body of Christ.

The enemy seeks to divide, discourage, and isolate believers. God, however, calls His people to walk together in faith, supporting one another and remaining united in purpose. Just as Gideon’s victory required obedience and trust in God’s plan, the Church today must remain united under Christ.

When believers come together in prayer, worship, and service, God’s strength is magnified. Unity creates an environment where God’s Spirit can move powerfully among His people.

Letting Go of Fear

Fear often keeps us from stepping into what God has called us to do. Like Gideon, we may feel unqualified, uncertain, or overwhelmed.

The challenge presented to the congregation was simple but profound: What fears are you still holding onto?

Are there areas where you are depending more on yourself than on God?

Faith requires surrender. It requires releasing control and trusting that God is able to accomplish far more than we can imagine. When we let go of fear and walk in obedience, we make room for God to demonstrate His power in our lives.

Communion and Repentance

The service concluded with a meaningful time of communion as the congregation reflected on Christ’s sacrifice and our unity in Him.

Communion serves as a reminder that we are one body, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. It is also a time for self-examination, repentance, and renewed commitment to follow Him faithfully.

As we partook together, we were reminded that our hope is found not in ourselves but in the finished work of Christ.

A Challenge for the Week

This week, take time to examine where you may be relying on your own strength instead of God’s. Bring those fears, worries, and uncertainties before Him in prayer.

Remember the lesson from Gideon’s life: God specializes in using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. When we trust Him, obey Him, and walk together in unity, His power is made perfect in our weakness.

“For when I am weak, then I am strong.” — 2 Corinthians 12:10

May we continue to walk in faith, remain united as a church family, and trust God to do what only He can do.
