Motherhood and Faith Reflections by Brother Jim Gainnie
This Mother’s Day service at Oak Grove Church was a heartfelt celebration of mothers, grandmothers, and the incredible influence they have within the family and the Kingdom of God. Brother Jim Gainnie shared a deeply personal and scripture-filled message honoring the strength, love, sacrifice, and spiritual impact of motherhood.
From the beginning of the message, Brother Jim emphasized that the influence of a mother reaches far beyond what can be seen in the moment. The love, prayers, guidance, and faithfulness of mothers leave a lasting legacy that shapes generations.
Reflecting on personal experiences and family memories, Brother Jim shared how the influence of godly parents — especially mothers — creates stability, faith, and unity within the home. He spoke about returning home from Vietnam in 1968 and the comfort, peace, and unconditional love he received from his mother during a difficult season in life. The story served as a powerful reminder of how deeply a mother’s love can impact the heart of a child, no matter their age.
Throughout the sermon, Brother Jim highlighted God’s design for family and emphasized that family was established by God before the church itself. He spoke about the beauty of young families, the joy and even the noise children bring into a home, and how those things reflect the heart of God as a loving Father.
The message continually pointed back to the importance of faith within the family structure.
Brother Jim encouraged parents — especially mothers — to trust in the seeds of faith they have planted in their children. Even during seasons when children struggle or wander, mothers were reminded not to lose hope. The prayers, teachings, and love they have poured into their families matter deeply and continue to work in ways they may not always see immediately.
Referencing covenant promises found in scripture, Brother Jim explained that God’s Word carries power and authority. He encouraged mothers to stand firmly on God’s promises rather than becoming overwhelmed by fear, worry, or the pressures of society.
Isaiah 40:11 became a central scripture in the message:
“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
This scripture beautifully illustrated God’s tenderness toward mothers and families. Just as a shepherd gently cares for the flock, God lovingly cares for mothers carrying the weight of raising children, guiding families, and nurturing hearts.
Brother Jim also spoke about the sacred responsibility of motherhood and the value God places on children. Children were described not as burdens, but as gifts entrusted by God. The sermon emphasized that motherhood is not accidental — it is a divine calling filled with purpose and eternal significance.
The message challenged families to protect and honor God’s design for life and family. There was also a strong emphasis on repentance, healing, and returning to biblical values in a culture that often diminishes the importance of motherhood and family structure.
Grandmothers were also honored during the service for the vital role they play in reinforcing faith, wisdom, and spiritual values within the family. Brother Jim encouraged grandmothers to continue praying, supporting, and loving their families intentionally, reminding them that their influence continues to shape future generations.
Proverbs 31:28 was referenced as a powerful reminder of the honor due to godly mothers:
“Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”
The sermon emphasized the importance of speaking with wisdom, kindness, and love within the home. Brother Jim reminded mothers that their words carry tremendous influence and that even small moments of encouragement, correction, and compassion leave lasting impressions on their children.
Drawing from 1 Corinthians 13, the congregation was reminded that love is patient, kind, enduring, and selfless — qualities so often demonstrated through motherhood.
For mothers feeling weary, overwhelmed, or discouraged, Brother Jim offered encouragement through Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
The message reassured mothers that God sees every sacrifice, every prayer, every sleepless night, and every unseen act of love. Their labor is not in vain. God’s grace is sufficient to sustain them through every season of motherhood.
Toward the end of the service, the importance of honoring mothers was strongly emphasized. The congregation was reminded that honoring mothers is not meant to happen only once a year, but daily through love, respect, gratitude, and reconciliation where needed.
One of the most touching moments came as the church was reminded that God hand-picked every mother and every child. Even imperfect mothers carry value, purpose, and significance in God’s plan.
The final encouragement of the message was simple but powerful:
Love your family well.Speak life over your children.Trust God with the seeds you have planted. And never underestimate the eternal impact of a faithful mother.
Because motherhood is more than a role.It is a calling.A ministry. And one of God’s greatest gifts to the family.
