Unity in the Body: Discovering and Honoring God’s Gifts by Brother Jonathan Barnes

This week at Oak Grove Church, the message centered on unity, spiritual gifts, and the importance of every believer recognizing their role in the body of Christ. The sermon reminded the church that God never intended believers to compete with one another, but instead to work together in harmony, each person contributing the unique gifts God has placed within them.

A Season of Transition and Unity

The message began with an emphasis on transition, sanctification, and unity. Even during spiritual battles and moments of uncertainty, believers were encouraged to remain free in Christ and resist division, gossip, and competition. The church prayed together for protection, peace, and the removal of anything the enemy would try to use to disrupt unity.

The heart of the message was simple but powerful: a healthy church is built when people honor one another’s gifts rather than compare themselves to others.

David’s Example of Honor

Jonathan Barnes pointed to the life of King David as an example of humility and honor. Although David had been anointed for kingship, he still honored Saul because he recognized God’s divine appointment on Saul’s life.

This became a powerful illustration for the church today. Spiritual gifts are not about status or titles — they are about serving God and serving people. Honoring the gifts in others creates unity and allows the church to function the way God intended.

Understanding the Five-Fold Ministry

A major focus of the sermon was the five-fold ministry found in Scripture: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The message emphasized that these are not simply church titles or positions, but spiritual giftings distributed by God.

Every believer carries different measures of these gifts, and each one serves a purpose in strengthening the church.

Apostolic Gift

The apostolic gift builds, pioneers, and establishes. Moses was used as an example of apostolic leadership as he obeyed God’s direction to lead Israel out of Egypt. Paul the Apostle was also highlighted as someone sent out by the Holy Spirit to establish churches and spread the Gospel.

The message stressed that apostolic ministry still exists today and is vital for church planting and kingdom expansion.

Prophetic Gift

The prophetic gift reveals what God is speaking and helps bring heavenly perspective to earthly situations. The sermon referenced Agabus, who warned of an upcoming famine, allowing the early church to prepare and provide aid.

Jonathan Barnes explained that prophecy is not mystical entertainment — it is practical guidance empowered by the Holy Spirit to strengthen and direct the church.

Teaching Gift

Teaching was described as a supernatural ability to understand and communicate God’s Word clearly. Biblical examples such as Apollos, Priscilla, and Aquila demonstrated how teaching helps believers mature in faith and understand truth more deeply.

Pastoral Gift

The pastoral gift protects, feeds, gathers, and cares for people. One of the strongest points made during the message was that a church cannot thrive on evangelism alone. Evangelists may attract people, but pastors help nurture and retain them through genuine care and discipleship.

The congregation was encouraged by recognizing the strong pastoral culture already present within Oak Grove Church — seen through fellowship meals, support for one another, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Evangelistic Gift

The evangelistic gift carries a passion for reaching people with the message of Christ. The sermon challenged believers to share Jesus in everyday life and not leave evangelism solely to a few individuals.

The example of Jesus Christ speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well illustrated how Jesus intentionally crossed barriers to reach people others overlooked.

The Church Needs Every Gift

One of the most impactful themes of the message was that no single person carries every gift fully. God designed the church so believers would need one another.

Apostles build.Prophets reveal.Teachers explain.Pastors nurture.Evangelists reach.

When all of these gifts work together, the church begins to reflect heaven on earth.

Jonathan Barnes encouraged everyone to identify their primary gifting and embrace it boldly. Sometimes, he noted, the people closest to us — even spouses — can recognize our gifts before we do ourselves.

Reaching the Community Together

The sermon also turned toward practical outreach. Ideas were discussed for future family-focused events, including community days at local schools with bounce houses, face painting, food, and worship. The goal is simple: create opportunities to connect with families and share the love of Christ in welcoming and practical ways.

The church also celebrated upcoming unity efforts with other congregations, including support for a Baptist baptism service and a multi-day revival planned for mid-June. These efforts reflected the message’s central theme that the body of Christ is stronger when churches work together instead of separately.

A Church Marked by Safety and Welcome

Throughout the service, there was a recurring emphasis on creating an atmosphere where people feel safe, seen, and welcomed. The warmth of genuine community was described as one of the clearest reflections of Christ’s love.

The message closed with collective prayer, asking God for wisdom, compassion, healing, and direction — not only for the church, but for the entire community.

In a world filled with division and comparison, this sermon served as a reminder that God calls His people to unity, humility, and cooperation. Every gift matters, every believer has purpose, and the church is strongest when it functions together as one body in Christ.
